Key questions of democracy and citizenship are becoming increasingly inseparable from discussions on the digital technologies’ development. Gaining traction in academic disciplines across the humanities, social and technical sciences, the question of how political processes are influenced by technological innovation—and what makes such influences productive or disruptive—has simultaneously become a leading emphasis for public interest groups, civil society organizations, and public authorities.

Linnet Taylor is a Professor of International Data Governance at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT). She leads the ERC-funded Global Data Justice -project, seeking to understand the different perspectives worldwide on what constitutes just treatment through data technologies. Her research focuses on the use of new sources of digital data in governance and research regarding issues of human and economic development.

Linnet Taylor’s recent publications discuss the interface between big data, rights and democratic representation worldwide, looking at how people are represented through digital data, paying attention to social and economic inclusion and exclusion through data. The work covers, for instance, various environments including the development and humanitarian response sectors, smart cities and living labs, and more broadly developments in the public sphere in countries worldwide.
